Ever have one of those days? You know . . . when everything seems to be difficult and you want to snap someone’s head off?

New MerciesIt was the week of VBS. You can probably imagine the chaos around me: lots of kids that don’t belong to me, and this particular year, I didn’t even know them or their parents. My class was large, and one of my assistants was in training as it was his first year. Several active kids spurred into high energy with all that was happening around them, but I held it together, using up so much of the grace for others stored in my heart.

The problem: VBS was in the morning, so I still had the rest of the day to go.

My poor children! We were all tired from the early mornings and the energy required to work in VBS, so we were all a little on edge. And tired. And short-tempered.

But it became a great opportunity to demonstrate to them one of the beauties of Scripture, that God’s mercies are new every morning. And therefore, mine need to be as well.

Lamentations 3:22-23 says, Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

His compassions never fail–even when mine do. Every morning He loves me just the same as He did yesterday, no matter how high- or low-energy I was the day before. No matter how well I held it together. No matter. He is so faithful.

And so I was reminded to free myself of all guilt. Yes, my children and I needed to apologize for the short tempers, but then it needed to be over and done with. I needed to remember that those high energy kids that seemed to take everything from me–God put me in their charge for this week and would give me the grace to love on them. And my own children I would face for the rest of the day–God put me in their charge for their lives and would give me the grace to love on them. Imperfectly more often than not, but with fresh grace and compassion every morning.

What internal guilt do you need to free yourself from today?
