Sometimes, we all want a fresh start. During this second week of the new year, I’m offering something that may help you clean out last year’s bad habits and begin new habits. Good habits. Godly habits.
Last week, Jocelyn Green’s book, Free to Lean, gave us permission to lead an unbalanced life. She encouraged us to follow God, to lean into His guidance and not worry about being perfectly divided between work and family and fun.
But maybe that’s not the big concern for you. Maybe you’re overwhelmed with regrets, haunted by your temper or weighted down with guilt. Perhaps pride drives people away from you or a discouraging attitude keeps people at arm’s length. How do you find true friends, and what do you do when conflict arises?
Those are precisely the questions answered by Doug Fields in his book, Fresh Start.
God is calling you to a life more abundant that the one you’re experiencing right now. ~Doug Fields, Fresh Start
Fresh Start: Description from Amazon
Trapped by harmful habits, behaviors, and attitudes, we struggle to become the person God has created and called us to be. Saddleback Church teaching pastor Doug Fields says it’s never too late to get a fresh start. With personal stories and youthful writing, Doug challenges readers to recognize that they may say they want God in their lives, but they really don’t want to change. They are stuck. He says, “It’s not about trying harder, it’s about plugging into God’s transforming power and submitting your entire life to Christ. Age doesn’t matter; fresh starts are for everyone.” Topics include:
- Dealing with pride
- Defining success
- Living with guilt
- Struggling with conflicts
- Finding true friendships
- Overcoming discouragement
- Facing rejection
- Attacking anger
My Thoughts about the Book
It doesn’t matter what age you are or how long you’ve been a Christian; fresh starts are for everybody. ~Doug Fields, Fresh Start
Fresh Start is a great read that addresses some of the most common places we get stuck in life. The author discusses hopes that fall short, like dreams for what our life should look like and moments we achieve success but it doesn’t look like we think it should. He tackles difficult topics like rejection and anger, and he dives into hurt and conflict in relationships.
Although some readers won’t like it, I appreciated Mr. Fields’ sarcastic humor, which often had me smiling or giggling as I saw myself in his comment. His stories were easy for me to relate to and often made his point without a lot of extra fluff.
The Bottom Line – 5 stars
The chapter breakdowns were easy to follow, and the steps forward were clear. Even though I would have said before reading it that none of the covered areas is overly difficult for me, the book was worth my time to read. If you do have emotional issues holding you back, this book may help you resolve them within yourself and move forward in a healthy way.
God is committed to carrying on the work He has started in you! ~Doug Fields, Fresh Start
