Several months ago, Vice President Mike Pence, never quiet about his faith, openly It's both comforting to me and an answer to my prayers that God is so central in one of our leader's lives.said that Jesus speaks to him. And some non-Christians in the media went ballistic.

I’m grateful for his words. It’s both comforting to me and an answer to my prayers that God is so central in one of our leader’s lives. I appreciate that he prays with his wife most mornings before he leaves the house and that he’s known for occasionally stopping a meeting to pray for guidance.

But after all my years of working with women, I wonder: Do you believe God speaks to you?

I Don’t Hear God

Do you really think [God] loved you enough to die for you, but not enough to talk to you? ~Priscilla Shirer, Discerning the Voice of God

Over the years, more than one Christian woman has come to me and admitted that she didn’t hear God. Often, these were women who I knew fairly well, had served in the church for years, and who genuinely wanted to love and follow God. My heart always broke for them. How sad it is to be trapped, wanting to give everything to God but thinking He doesn’t acknowledge you in ways you can hear!

In my newest fiction book releasing in two weeks, Seeking Isabel, the main character struggles to believe God is speaking to him. He’s always believed God guided him in his job as a police detective, but now that God is speaking more audibly, he doubts.

Even those who hear from God regularly sometimes wonder if they heard Him speak or if it’s their own wishful thinking taking center stage. It’s a common problem. Even those who hear from God regularly sometimes wonder if they heard Him speak or if it’s their own wishful thinking taking center stage. Because God doesn’t speak to us face to face like an earthly person, we all hesitate.

Can I tell you something? If you struggle with hearing God or wonder if the latest thing you heard was really Him, you are probably doing far better than you realize.

How God Speaks

Do you read the Bible? Ever learn anything new or see something in a fresh way? That’s God. Do you ever get a sense that something is wrong, even if you can’t quite put your finger on it? Probably God. How about those moments when a friend or loved one says the exact right thing in the exact right moment, sometimes without even knowing what you’re struggling with. Yep, God.

He’s speaking all around us, guiding us, loving us, teaching us. He wants us to know His path and give us His wisdom even more than we want to know and have it.

But sometimes—more often than we like to admit—that’s also our problem. We don’t really want to know it. After all, if we know it, we become responsible to follow it. To do it. To obey.

Unfortunately, this is not one of those areas where ignorance is bliss. God wants us to know His will and His path so much that He doesn’t just go away when we stubbornly refuse to listen. Instead, He persists, even to the point of allowing us to have our own way and pay the consequences of our chosen ignorance.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The growing process is not a waste. There are benefits every small step of the way. ~Priscilla Shirer, Discerning the Voice of God

progress is what God wants from us.Learning to recognize God’s voice takes practice and patience. Purposeful listening and a determination to hear Him are also important. But just because you don’t do it perfectly or feel like you’ll never get to where you want to be doesn’t mean you aren’t making progress.

And progress is what God wants from us.

So keep moving forward. Continue to read your Bible, pray, and talk to other Christians about how and what they hear from God. Remember: every master was also once a fumbling student.

You can do this! Press onward, and try.
