Are you compromising the message of the Gospel? Are you compromising the message of the Gospel, weakening your effectiveness for the Kingdom and leaving blessings God wants you to enjoy unclaimed? I think most of us would say something along the lines of, “I don’t think so.”

Perhaps you would defend yourself with more conviction than me, absolutely convinced that you profess the same Gospel as the apostles of the early church. I’m not sure that I would even answer the question directly if you confronted me with it. I would be cautious in my answer, wanting to think it through carefully first.

And after reading Killing Kryptonite by John Bevere, I see I have some work to do.

Lord, I want to know You the best a man can know You. I want to please You the best a man can please You. Show me Your heart, reveal to me what is important to You, and show me what is not so important to You. Teach me Your ways and may my life bring joy to You. ~John Bevere, Killing Kryptonite: Destroy What Steals Your Strength

You Can Destroy What Steals Your Strength

Just like Superman, who can leap over any hurdle and defeat every foe, followers of Christ have the supernatural ability to conquer the challenges we face. But the problem for both Superman and us is there’s a kryptonite that steals our strength.

Of course, both Superman and kryptonite are fictional. But spiritual kryptonite is not.

Killing KyrptoniteThis book offers answers to why so many of us are unable to experience the divine strength that was evident among first-century Christians.

In Killing Kryptonite, John Bevere reveals what this kryptonite is, why it’s compromising our communities, and how to break free from its bondage.

Not for the faint of heart, Killing Kryptonite is anything but a spiritual sugar high. This is serious truth for any Christ-follower who longs to embrace the challenging but rewarding path of transformation.

My Thoughts about the Book

The reality is, when someone knows the truth, knows the will of God, knows what God has spoken, and yet pushes back and doesn’t obey, it is idolatry. The reason? Their will, agenda, wishes, and desires have been placed above God’s. All of these things come before Him, and an idol. ~John Bevere, Killing Kryptonite: Destroy What Steals Your Strength

John clearly speaks hard truths with a pastor’s heart full of love for God’s people, much like the apostle Paul did years ago. Mr. Bevere doesn’t want us just getting through life, but he deeply desires us to live fully-pleasing-and-acceptable-to-God lives. Lives that do not merely display God’s glory on occasion but are full of His power and grace on a daily basis.

Using illustrations from his life and ministry, John ignited a passion in me for more—more intimacy with God, more display of His power in and through me, more of whatever God needs me to see and wants me to be. More than once I felt convicted where I recognized that compromise has crept into my life, and more than once I asked God to help me remember the lessons I was learning so I could walk away from this book forever changed.

The Bottom Line – 5 stars

I do believe this is one of those few books that I will read again—not merely because I want to, even though it was that good. No, it’s because I need to. If you want to better understand what holds you back from more fully experiencing God in your life, this is a great place to start.

The truth is we are defined by our actions, not by our intentions. ~John Bevere, Killing Kryptonite: Destroy What Steals Your Strength
